A shepherd looks after his flock. The shepherd leads the sheep to the pastures if they are to eat. When the sheep are thirsty, they rely on the shepherd to bring them water. If a sheep becomes feverish or unwell, he has no way of healing himself. The shepherd is the one who works to fix whatever is wrong with the sheep. If the sheep is in danger from a predator, it is only the shepherd who can protect him, because sheep have no true means of defence. That’s how a literal shepherd and his literal sheep interact.
